SAT: Pioneering Circular Business Models in the Electronics Industry

Our Project partner SAT was founded in 1996 as a non-profit research and technology-transfer organisation, located in Vienna.
The different activities embrace research, development and technology transfer as well as training in resource efficiency with European industry. The organisation serves various small- and medium-sized recycling and re-use companies as well as large enterprises from the electronics sector in order to implement circular business models in practice and reach full legal compliance at minimum cost. Current research topics include resource efficiency, pay-per-use, WEEE management, prolongation of product use (upgrade, re-use, refurbishment), intelligent disassembly/separation technologies and End-of-Life management.

In addition SAT runs CARE Electronics (= Comprehensive Approach for the Recycling and Eco-efficiency of Electronics) – a strategic initiative to understand the international & national implications of sustainability for the electr(on)ics industry in the future. CARE Electronics is an independent, industrial R&D network with currently more than 70 members from large & small companies & research organisations.

Finally SAT organises frequently international workshops and conferences on resource-efficiency in the electr(on)ics industry under their brand names Green Electronics (approx. 100 participants) and CARE INNOVATION (approx. 400-500 participants from all over the world).

SAT is now actively contributing the CIRC-UITS project. Circular Integration of independent Reverse supply Chains for the smart reUse of IndusTrially relevant Semiconductors (CIRC-UITS) is a project funded under the Horizon Europe Program (2023-2025) that aims to address the emerging semiconductor material crisis by supporting value chains in the automotive and mass electronics industries. The project develops digital solutions for the design, manufacture and management of electronic components and end-of-life products. The project also includes testing in an appropriate industrial environment.
SAT is supporting mainly the development of circular business models for the 4 industry pilots and help the participating companies to implement them with their demo products. As this is circular business models are still not “business as usual” for most companies, they can benefit from our more than 20 years of experience and 15 European Union funded research projects in this research domain. In addition we are leading the exploitation and stakeholder engagement activities of the CIRC-UITS project.
